Navigate With Ease nüvi 880 comes ready to go
right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator® NT street
maps and millions of points of interest (POIs) such as hotels,
restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs and more. The 880 will ship
preloaded with maps of North America, 6 million POIs, supports
multi-destination routing with route optimization (sorting by
distance), and has a trip log that provides an electronic bread
crumb trail of up to 10,000 points. The nuvi 850 and nuvi 880
have pre-loaded maps of the United States and Canada,
text-to-speech voice directions, an MP3 player, FM transmitter,
multiple point routing, and an extra-wide 4. All Garmin
nuvi 700 series models have
pre-loaded maps of the United States and Canada,
text-to-speech voice directions, an MP3 player, FM
transmitter, multiple point routing, and an extra-wide 4.
All Garmin nuvi 600 series models have pre-loaded maps of
the United States and Canada, text-to-speech voice
directions, an MP3 player, and an extra-wide 4. All Garmin
nuvi 300 series models have pre-loaded maps of the United
States and Canada, text-to-speech voice directions, an MP3
player, and a 3. All Garmin nuvi 200 series
models have pre-loaded maps of at least the continental
United States and provide basic voice prompts.
With a 480x272-pixel resolution, the display is bright and
easy to read, whether you're reading maps or using the other
features. Other new features found on the 800 series includes
"instant on" startup, which eliminates the typically long wait
for maps to load. Meanwhile, the Garmin nuvi 860 is the
European version of the nuvi 880; it does not include maps of
North America. In addition to 2D maps, the device offers 3D
digital elevation maps, plus "millions" of points of interest
(POIs). That right there is the deal killer for me… The number
one complaint GPS users have about their devices is out of date
maps. Both units came with 2009 maps and are fantastic
performers. Simply touch the color screen to enter a
destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and
turn-by-turn voice directions. Now, it's easy to search for
locations on Google Maps or Mapquest, then transfer the
addresses directly to your Garmin GPS navigator. Note: All
nüvis come with detailed NAVTEQ maps containing more than 6
million pre-loaded point of interest locations. The maps Garmin
uses (which they buy from Navtek) are "acceptable" but in my
travels I find annoying errors. The Navtek maps are mostly
accurate for the base (missing one of the entry gates) and
surrounding areas but when I ask the 880 to take me somewhere
off the base it tries to route me straight through a 10 foot
tall barbed wire fence rather than through the main gates. My
aviation Garmin units have very detailed maps which include
lots of detail on unpaved roads and associated POI's and when
you use them in automotive mode you get to see this detail.
Speak a menu option or touch the color screen to enter a
destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and
turn-by-turn voice directions. It not only advises you with
alternate routes, but gives 3-D maps and turn by turn walk
throughs of those routes, so you can forecast the trip before
time and effectively plan. It has high levels of brightness
making text clearly visible and maps look great. The brightness
can be adjusted and there is also an automatic mode for viewing
maps. This widescreen navigator features speech recognition
(SR), preloaded maps, hands-free calling and an FM transmitter
plus real-time local weather, traffic, movie times, gas prices,
stock information, local news and events.
